Now That You Are Planning To Compete In Commerce, You Need Desktop Management

The reason for business is to make money, and once engaged in the process, the usual trajectory for successful companies is expansion and growth. Today, it is hard to imagine being able to function in the market place without the use of information technology. For any company that is using computers, the need for desktop management is absolute.

The first and probably most used interconnecting use is the ubiquitous office electronic mail system. As soon as it is set up, it becomes extremely popular, and for good reason, it offers the fastest and surest communication method. And the fact that it can also eliminate a few meetings probably helps explain the popularity.

The advent of an internal electronic mail system alone can increase productivity dramatically, allowing employees to contact one another regardless of the time of day or geographic separation. A single mass email has the greatest probability of getting to a group of employees in the fastest possible way than any other. Once transmitted, each employee has the exact same information waiting to be retrieved at their convenience. Once initiated, email usually becomes almost a habit, with employees checking for information on a very regular basis.

It is also possible to reduce the cost of software through the use of networks, both in discounts to the required number of copies needed for purchase. Another means of realizing savings comes in the reduction to the manpower required to install and service these programs. With capable technicians, a company can ensure that its employees have the information technology they need to do the job at the lowest costs.

The business and employees benefit from the ability to stay in touch with and service clients and accounts from anywhere without traveling, and when they do have to travel, they remain in contact with the home office for support and direction. The gain from the technology, however, can be lost without qualified personnel dedicated to keeping it running smoothly. Software is not always as easily installed as we would like, even those which tout a plug and play platform. Inevitably there are some machines display complications with compatibility with the configuration in place, almost the way some people present with allergic reactions to medicines most tolerate well. Dealing with these complications can cost many man hours when preformed by the average worker who maybe skilled with using the computer, but not necessarily with servicing it. When an employee has compatible computer setups at home and at the office, the temptation to take work home and bring the results back can be too hard to resist. This well meaning effort to give even more energy and effort to the company can also result in giving the company network malicious software that can wreak havoc on the system. Having professionals on staff to resolve these problems is a very valuable addition and can save the business from catastrophe.

One of the most common mistakes hardworking, dedicated employees make is bringing work home and then bringing it back, especially if they use their home computer to do the work at home. All the energy effort and money spent to keep the malicious software constantly attacking from the world wide web out of your system could be lost with a single thumb drive. Rarely do home systems have the same level of protection desktop management team installs on the business system, which means the overworking employee could be introducing harmful electrons from home.

There is an ironic truth in the management complaint that computers have made the business so complex that if the power goes off or the information technology freezes up, everybody may as well go home. It has come to pass that we are so deeply invested in computers to operate on a daily business that we can not continue to operate without them. While this is literally true in many manufacturing and financial sectors, it is also beginning to be the state of affairs for nearly every company, and highlights the need for systems management software.

 

Information is the lifeblood of industry, from determining what product or service is needed to handling the myriad requirements that must all be pulled together to create them. Knowing the customer is a complicated business that is not intuitively obvious, and those who crack the code first are the most successful. Information is the key to the code, and information technology allows for its collection and analysis. As this new era of automation matures, the quest for ever greater detail in the information collected and studied grows until there comes a point where there is simply too much to effectively make sense of.

 

Not only is the business of manufacturing a goldmine of data, but even how we find, hire, manage and motivate our workforce is the subject of mountains of information. The process of garnering this information, however, has become an enormous task outside the normal skill set of management. Increasingly we find businesses outsourcing portions of, if not the entire process.

 

This is not to imply that any manager would wish to have less information, far from it. It is that the effort to gain usable, decision-making understanding from the data has been overcome by the methodology for garnering the raw data from which it is distilled. Information carries with it nuances that help determine its meaning in the form of the entering arguments for the collection process. This is the age old recognition that how one asks a question influences the answer to a degree. With the manager expending so much time in collecting reference points and measurements, there is little left to consider the purpose and possible alternative collection means.

 

The reason information systems became such an integral part of business is their ability to enhance the decision making process. When the use of the system becomes so cumbersome and time consuming that it cuts into the time a manager has to explore data and make operational decisions, it has stopped enhancing the business. The complexity of our tools is rapidly becoming more problematic than running a business without them. While there is certainly reason to expend energy training management on new tools and software, it should not continue to erode their time on a day to day basis.

 

There is a means of restoring sanity to the balance of business using computers; the use of the computer to control the information gathering and analyzing automatically. This is, in essence, using a computer to run the computer, and it pays immediate and far reaching dividends. This gives management the ability to make the decision on what data it needs and in what format it wants the information presented. That accomplished, managers can spend their time doing what they were hired to do; run the company and make a profit.

 

If a business is in the manufacturing industry, management does not want or need to spend its time gathering and inputting data about the supply chain, constructing statistical process control charts, or gathering data on trends in the demand for their product or the prices of their supply chain. What they need is that data collected for them by an automated system that collects and collates the information and packages it in a readily identifiable format and delivered to their desktop before the day begins.

 

So while it is important that someone is aware of the collection and interpretation of all the detailed information a company has, there has to be a way to develop that raw data into useful knowledge for each level of management. This is the crux of systems management software, manipulating data collected by software systems to develop actionable information for leadership to run the business efficiently and profitably.
